asprally.JPG

The 2009 Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally will be a two day event held on 30th & 31st May, with major sponsor for 2007 and 2008, Application Service Provider (asp) continuing their support and being joined in 2009 by new sponsor Cut Price Truck Rentals. The event will comprise Round 1 of the “South Australian Rally Championship” and the “South Australian Tarmac Rally Championship”.

Being conscious of community needs, the event is throwing its support behind Cure4CF by making it the official charity. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common inherited disease causing premature death in Australia, Western Europe and the USA, with one in every 2,500 children born being affected. The Cure4CF research team based at our own Women's and Children's Hospital in Adelaide, South Australia, has developed a potential cure for the dreadful lung disease that causes most of the problems in CF.

FREE SPECTATOR POINTS
Spectators for the asp / Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally can get up close to the cars at the Service Park which will be located for most of the weekend at Pennys Hill Winery, Main Rd McLaren Vale.

In addition, from 1-3pm on the Saturday, 30th of May, the cars will be gathered at the Foreshore Carpark on the Esplanade at Victor Harbor for service.

For a great view of the cars in action, check out the spectator points below:

Saturday 30th May
Old Willunga Hill – 9:10am to 12:20pm
Travelling from Adelaide on the Victor Harbor Road continue past the McLaren Vale turn off and the Willunga turnoff. Continue up the hill for approx 2km after the junction and turn left into John Yeates lookout, follow directions from officials for parking and viewing positions.

There is plenty of great viewing on a large grass area that acts as our Willunga Hill grandstand. Listen to the cars climb the Old Willunga Hill Road in top gear as they approach the long sweeping left hander in front of you. If they get the line right, the exit to the steep right hander will be quick. If they get it wrong, it will end in tears! Bring a chair or a rug. All cars will make 2 passes. For a sneak preview of the ‘in car’ action on this stage check out this video (watch out for the spin in front of the spectators!)

Hindmarsh Tiers – 12:10pm to 3:25pm
From the Willunga Hill spectator point, continue south along Victor Harbor Road for approx 28km and turn right onto the Hindmarsh Valley Road (signposted Aldinga Beach), after approx 1.5km turn left onto Hutchinson Road (signposted Wardle Bridge), after approx 3.5km turn hard right onto Greenhills Road. Continue along Greenhills Road for approx 4km to parking. Follow instructions from officials for viewing positions.

Last year, the rain made this stage like driving on ice. Cars on semi slick tyres were twitchy and crews were on edge. You will see cars enter the fast right hander. Some will be neat and tidy, whilst others will drift through on maximum attack. Cars will make 2 passes.

Sunday 31st May
Wickhams Hill – 10am to 1:30pm
When leaving turn left onto Main Road towards McLaren Vale then turn right onto Kangarilla Road (sign post Kangarilla). Continue along Kangarilla Road for approx 10.5km travelling through McLaren Flat (the road changes from Kangarilla to McLaren Flat Road past Wickhams Road then turn right into Toops Hill Road and travel for approx 4km (becomes dirt, with steep climbs, two way traffic please drive accordingly). Park after the last car on the same side of the road to allow traffic to flow. Follow instructions from officials for viewing positions.

Cars will be accelerating out of a very tight hairpin and up the hill towards you. By the time they get to your point, car and crew will be fully committed to negotiating a slight left in the road over a blind crest. Quite often, gravel adds further complexity. You will notice some crews taking the cautious approach and lifting off the power....others will chase precious seconds and stay on the limit. Cars will make 2 passes.
