Ex multiple Australian and South Australian Champion back in the fray

Barry Lowe

Barry Lowe has lodged Scout Rally SA's first entry today.

Coming out of a long retirement from the sport, this will be Barry's 3rd only event in 20 years. He is teaming up with his long time partner Helen Pearl, who will be in the hot seat for her first ever event. Lenny (Helen's nickname) made an off the cuff remark leading up to her 50th Birthday, earlier this year. "What fun it would be to compete in an event along side Barry!"

That lead to the dusting off the 1979 VB Commodore, and rebuilding it ready to compete in the Classics section of the 2010 Scout rally SA. The 400 horsepower 304 V8 (owned by Barry's twin sons Aaron and Daniel) will be a real crowd pleaser, and the crew will be really keen to do well. The last time the car was rallied, it took Geoff Portman to victory in the 2005 Alpine Rally.

Barry is a multiple Australian Rally Champion, having won the title in 1985 and 1986 in a Subaru RX Turbo - the only two years he contested it. His competition at the time included some of the icons of Australian Rallying - names such as Ed Mulligan, George Fury, Greg Carr, our own Ed Ordynski, and John Atkinson - father of Australia's WRC star, and Rally SA winner, Chris Atkinson

He is also a multiple South Australian Rally Champion, winning in 1982, 1983 and 1990 - coming to 1990 without competing in between

BJ and Lenny will be keen to uphold such a sterling reputation. Watch for them at Angaston, in the forest, and on the stages

The Classics section will attract other entries with great pedigrees. Look for the return of BDA escorts, and names of yesteryear like Ross Dunkerton, 5 times ARC winner - adding to the great spectacle that is the SCOUTS RALLY SA.
