Some of Australia’s top young rally competitors recently attended the CAMS Driver Development Camp held at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

The participants were chosen for the camp based on their past achievements in rallying, their professional approach and future ambitions in the sport.

Five young rally competitors were selected from all over the country: Ross Allan (VIC), James Rodda driver from South Australia, Rebecca Smart Co-driver from Queensland and twins Tom (driver) and Nerralie (co-driver) Wilde from Western Australia.

The participants were put through five days of physical and mental training, which reflects that of a full time AIS athlete, focusing on areas which will assist them in their journey to a career in motorsport. Physical sessions with personal trainers included strength and conditioning, endurance, heat stress and anthropometry tests.

The theory components of the course included media and sponsorship, nutrition, recovery and relaxation techniques and a psychology session with top motorsport psychologist Noel Blundell.

AIS feedback showed outstanding results from all of the rally participants.

“I was really impressed with the performance of the rally program participants. They all have a solid foundation to build on for the remainder of the year. I hope that this week will assist them in achieving their goals in 2010 with the ongoing support of CAMS”, said Robert Dunt, CAMS Driver Development Co-Ordinator.

The camp has proven extremely beneficial to the drivers who attended. “After the week I feel I have gained valuable skills and information to take home and apply to competition”, said Rebecca Smart.

All the participants would like to thank CAMS and the Australian Institute of sport for the opportunity of attending such a prestigious facility and are planning to implement the skills obtained towards their 2010 championship goals and beyond.

All participants are seeking on-going support for the 2010 season so any contribution from local, state or national businesses would be greatly appreciated.
