"Rally revamp on the road" - The Advertiser 21/5/10

asp/Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally

STUART INNES - The Advertiser 21/5/10
The 2010 South Australian Rally Championship kicks off today with the Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally expanded to include a round of two other Australian championships. This year, over three days instead of two, the event will include the first of four rounds of the SARC as well as the second rounds of the Australian Modern Tarmac Rally Championship and the Australian Classic Tarmac Rally Championship. Many cars are cross-entered - it's also a round of the SA Tarmac Rally Championship - so effectively there are 90 contenders.

The ASP/Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally has its prologue at Mallala from 1pm today to seed the starting order of road competition to¬morrow. The SARC cars then hit the track at Mallala at 7.30 tonight to have their first two timed competitive stages. Tomorrow the foreshore area at Victor Harbor will be the service centre as the rally runs on roads of the southern Fleurieu Peninsula. The service centre on Sunday will be at Penny's Hill Winery, just north of Willunga. The open (modern) category includes Kevin Weeks in the Supaloc Lamborghini and last year's winner Andrew Burnard in a Mitsubishi Evo, each all-wheel-drive cars which will be handy if forecast showers come on Sunday. Last year's Targa Tasmania winning co-driver Naomi Tillett is giving her expertise to Rob Black in a Porsche GT3 RS prepared by Jim Richards. Classics include Ford Mustang and Escort, Datsun 2450Z, Torana and Commodore V8s and Jeremy Browne's lovely Lancia.

Reigning SARC titleholder Matt Selley has removed the turbocharger restrictor from his Subaru WRX to run in the open category. In the SARC, watch for former champ Declan Dwyer, Mark Povey and rising star, 2009 runner-up James Rodda.
